Off to Switzerland

As with most things in life, the results are often determined during the planning stage. Our trip to Switzerland was no exception.

A number of months before we started packing, Marlene was planning. It was going to be a summer trip. That meant it wasn’t going to be the traditional ski holiday in the Alps, but instead one of hiking and biking. We could envision the hiking portion given what we knew of the Alps, but for the cycling part, that left us with questions.

We like to cycle. It seems to be the perfect mode of transportation to balance covering an area large enough to see something of significance, but not too fast that we miss the detail. We want to stop and smell the roses, and that means taking pictures, tasting the fruit in the fields, shopping where the local people buy their groceries, and saying hello in the local language. We want to get below the tourist veneer and see what the country is really like.

The internet is our best source of information for planning. Its all there, maps, accommodation, recreational opportunities, reviews from previous travelers on what worked and what didn’t.

Our plan included a week stay in Grindelwald, a small rural town nicely situated in the Alps for hiking. The second week would be in Interlaken, a tourist town between 2 lakes at the edge of the Alps, where cycling opportunities were more likely.
